Measles is in Jamaica

Today in the during a presentation by opposition spokesman on Health Dr. Dayton Campbell revealed in the house of parliament that there had been one (1) reported case of measles in Jamaica. Intially the case was deemed an imported case of measles, however, it was later confirmed by Minister of Health, Dr. Christopher Tufton that the child who had been a patient at Hospiten, a private hospital in second city, Montego Bay had measles two weeks prior to coming to Jamaica, and devoloped complications while arriving in Jamaica.

Minister Tufton issisted that the child did not have measles upon entering the country . Why then were there complications experienced if child was completely treated and had fully recovered? Was this child vaccinated? Moreover are their any screening procedures at the island’s entry ports. If so, why wasn’t the child quarantined.

The minister aluded that Jamaica is prepared and was adomant that in the event of an outbreak, the health sector stands ready to activate emergency protocols.

Why do we need an outbreak though, can’t they see that this is already an epidemic. It won’t be long before there is an outbreak in Jamaica if immediate action are not taken to detect, quarantee and treat and or vaccinate person who where not vaccinated with MMR, The Measles, Mumps and Rebulla shot.
