How to Make Avocado Oil: DIY Extracting the Oil Through Cooking

 

 

If you live in the tropics like Jamaica where the avocado tree reproduces in abundance, my Granny use to say “pear deh ya can stone dog”, you might be wondering what to do with all these avocados when they are literally spoiling under the tree. Don’t let them waste, make avocado oil.

Avocado oil can be made by extracting the oil from ripe avocados. It has a number of uses, from cooking to use in hair and skin treatments.  Extracting avocado oil is quite easy depending on the method, the most easiest way of extracting the oil is through cooking the avocados.

Extracting the Avocado Oil Through Cooking can be done in seven (7) quick and easy steps.

Step 1. Peel twelve avocados. Wash twelve avocados and use the knife to cut each one in half around the seed. Use a spoon to scoop out the fruit of the avocado and deposit it in a food processor or blender. Dispose of the skin and the seed.

Step 2. Puree the avocados. Turn the food processor or blender onto the puree setting. Mix the avocado fruit until it forms a smooth paste. Then scoop out the blended avocado and put it in a medium-sized pot.

Step 3. Cook the avocados on medium heat. Turn the stove on to medium heat and heat the avocados in the pot, stirring every five minutes. When the mixture starts to boil, it will start bubbling and you should notice the avocado oil rising to the top.

Step 4. Cook until the mixture gets dark. Keep cooking and stirring the mixture until the avocado changes from a light green to a dark green or brown, and the water has evaporated.

Step 5Scoop the avocado mixture into a bowl. When the avocado mixture has stopped cooking, spoon the mixture into a bowl. Place avocado mixture in clean, thin cloth such as cheesecloth or chiffon, turn the bowl up then holding the cloth in place around the rim of the bowl, gather the corners of the cloth together so that you’re left with a sack of avocado.

 Step 6. Squeeze to strain the avocado. Squeeze the sack of avocado over a bowl to strain out the oil. The oil should come out dripping into the bowl. Keep changing your grip and squeezing until no more oil is coming out.

Step 7. Pour the oil into a container. Once you have squeezed out all the oil, pour the oil from the bowl into a small bottle or into a container with a lid. Your avocado oil is now ready for use!
